Other News

So, on another topic other than my upcoming trip - ITS SNOWING!! We woke up to about an inch or so and it has just been snowing all day since. Although I normally would be pretty much against snow and the cold, I actually don't mind it too much... YET! TWU is hosting "Spirit of Christmas" for the surrounding community and a lot of families come to see all the different activites on campus. It is fun to watch all the little kids (who look like they have about 500 layers on) try to play in the snow.
I only have 3 days of classes left, then finals, and then its back to California for Christmas. This semester has gone by so fast and I can't believe that I won't see all my friends for 9 months. It is not going to be easy to leave and I am truely going to miss everyone at T-Dub...
Oh, and happy late Thanksgiving to all the Americans! I celebrated by writing one of my many papers... 'tis the season, eh?

Hope everyone is doing well!
PS. The pictures are of me and my friend, Kristen, on our walk in the torrential - well to a Californian - snow! :) Good Times!

Cherie: earlier you asked about things to do in some of the places you will be going. As to South Africa, I don't know how much time you'll have or how far away from the dock/boat you can go, but here are a couple of suggestions: The Kimberly Mine is a fascinating part of South African history, and the Drakensburg Gold Rush was every bit as compelling as the '49 rush was in your neck of the woods (http://www.places.co.za/html/bighole.html). It is the largest manmade hole in the world, and they provide a decent tour, and it is a good opportunity to learn more about a very important thing for most women, diamonds. Speaking of mines, I got a chance to go more than a mile down a shaft mine (copper) when I was a kid, and I still remember it as a tremendous experience. If you could arrange a tour of a shaft mine (Kimberly started as an open pit mine, became a shaft mine, and is now all filled with water/is no longer actively worked), I think you'd find it memorable (the worlds deepest shaft mine at over 3km deep is in SA, find out more at http://www.infomine.com/countries/southafrica.asp). Another idea would be to tour one of the famous Cape-area wineries like Stellenbosch (http://www.wineroute.co.za/), which have a history going back to the 1500's. Given your family's association with the grape, perhaps there would be more reason than just to taste the wine for you to check this out. A final suggestion, as a military man, would be to check out the many battle sites that dot the South African landscape--going back to the Zulu Wars, the Boer War, and on from there (http://www.africandreamholidays.com/place-to-stay/the-battlefields.html?sid=16357299_80354397). Isandhlwana, Ruark's Drift, etc. Somehow, though, I don't think this will rate very high on your priority list. I'll check out the other places your going to see if I have any ideas, this will probably suffice for my input on SA...
